Copper Falls for Second Day on Concern Supply Will Beat Demand
By Brett Foley
Feb. 27 (Bloomberg) – Copper fell for a second day in London on speculation that supply of the metal used in pipes and wires will beat demand this year.
Credit Suisse, Switzerland''s second-biggest bank, cut its 2007 price forecast for copper by 13 percent, New York-based analysts led by David Gagliano wrote in a report yesterday. Copper will have a production surplus of 180,000 tons this year due to recent destocking of the metal, particularly in China, Credit Suisse said, reversing an earlier forecast for a 50,000-ton deficit.
``The recent price rally has been based on the hope that the Chinese would return in a big way and restock their inventories,'''' Stephen Briggs, a London-based analyst at Societe Generale, said today by phone. ``But investing on that hope is a dangerous idea.''''
Copper for delivery in three months on the London Metal Exchange dropped $70, or 1.1 percent, to $6,220 a ton at 1:07 p.m. local time.
Earlier, gains on copper futures in Shanghai were pared on concern supply may rise faster than demand growth in China, the world''s largest user of the metal. Copper futures in Shanghai increased 1.7 percent after rising as much as 3.6 percent to the highest this year.
A shipment of 30,000 metric tons of the metal arrived in Shanghai yesterday, according to Great Wall Futures Corp.''s analyst Li Rong, fueling speculation supply will exceed demand.
Aluminum fell amid speculation that growing stockpiles would lead supply to exceed demand for the light metal this year. Global production would beat demand by 142,000 tons, Credit Suisse said in a report yesterday.
Inventories monitored by the LME rose for a seventh day by 12,475 tons, or 1.6 percent, to 796,800 tons, the exchange said in a daily report. Aluminum stockpiles have gained 14 percent this year to the highest since Aug. 2004.
``It is clear that there has been a major effort in recent weeks to push aluminum prices up through the psychologically important $3000,'''' said John Kemp, an analyst at Sempra Metals Ltd, one of 11 companies trading on the floor of the LME. ``Investors'' resolve will be tested in coming weeks unless the physical market turns around soon.''''
Aluminum declined $35, or 1.2 percent, to $2,860 a ton.
Among other LME-traded metals, nickel fell $200 to $41,100 a ton after trading at a record for a second consecutive session yesterday. Lead also slipped after trading at a record for a seventh straight day yesterday, falling $35, or 1.8 percent, to $1,905. Earlier it fell as much as 2.8 percent, the biggest intra-day fall since Jan. 9. Zinc fell $67 to $3,533 and tin, the only metal to gain on the LME today, rose $195, or 1.5 percent, to $13,670.

PT Timah is sole authorised Indonesian tin exporter \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\nRelease date: 27 Feb 2007 \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\nThe state controlled tin company PT Timah is since February 23 the only company in Indonesia with an export permit from the Trade ministry. Timah’s licence was granted last Friday, but other applications by seven independent smelters were turned down. \r\n\r\nThe Indonesian trade ministry rejected the smelters’ initial applications on the grounds that the supporting documents needed to be certified as true copies by local authorities, officials at several smelters told Metal Bulletin. \r\n\r\nThe seven producers were not aware of the requirement when they submitted applications to the ministry in early- and mid-February, officials said. They had previously been granted operating permits and supported in their applications by the governor of Bangka Belitung province, who failed to win re-election in local polls last week. Officials now hope to obtain approval sometime between March and June. \r\n\r\nPT Timah accounted for around a third of Indonesian refined tin production of some 125,000 tonnes in 2006 and is planning to produce 48 – 50,000 tonnes in 2007. The status of the other large Indonesian producer, PT Koba Tin, which planned to produce 17,000 tonnes this year but is under police investigation, remains unclear. \r\n\r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n \r\n\r\n< Back
